Full Text 1 The intellect rules the mind. God has bestowed the human intellect with the power to control the mind if it so decides. Shree Krishna says if somebody can strengthen that decision, intellect will be one-pointed and the mind will come into focus. You will shoot towards the goal like an arrow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=1 2 Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 Sloka 41 Chanting व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन | बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम् || 41|| vyavasayatmika buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-shakha hyanantash cha buddhayo ’vyavasayinam O descendent of the Kurus, the intellect of those who are on this path is resolute (marked by firm determination), and their aim is one-pointed. But the intellect of those who are irresolute is many-branched. How to Focus the Mind He says that Arjun, in order to traverse this path, you will need a resolute intellect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=34 3 We have come to this point that you need to give up attachment. This attachment to the world happens in a variety of ways. One is positive attachment – The object of your attachment, the wife or the husband or the children or the parents or the ice cream or the chocolate. Your mind keeps going there. Again and again and again. Sitting there, if your mind is repeatedly going to chai (tea) you can understand that your mind is attached to the chai, the tea. That is why the thought of the tea is coming again and again. That is positive attachment. The scriptures say, “Even if you are negatively attached, that is also attachment.” In other words, if there is hatred, whom do you hate? That fellow, he did bad to me 3 years ago. Listen, listen, he’s so bad. Listen, he’s so bad. He did this to me. He did this to me. The same bhajan/kirtan is going on. Just like in positive attachment, your mind goes there Similarly, in hatred also, your mind goes there. Whether you love the world or you hate the world - Either way, the scriptures say, “Your mind is attached.” Or you fear the world. Or you envy the world. Or you detest the world. Or you loathe (to hate somebody/something) the world. All this is different forms of attachment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=94 4 If somehow, you attach your mind to God, gopyah kamad bhayat kamso dvesac caidyadayo nrpah Whatever way their mind went to Shree Krishna, the mind got attached to the Supreme Lord And they all got purified. When the mind goes to something pure, it becomes pure. And the reverse, whatever way we bring our mind to the world, as the world consists of the three gunas (three material modes of nature), the mind becomes dirty. Detachment means that you are neither to love the world, nor to hate it, nor to fear it. Kabira khada bazaar mein sabki mange khair Na kahu so dosti na kahu so bair Na Dosti, Na Dushmani, neither friendship nor hatred https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=216 5 Like a mother, she has lost her son in the fair/exhibition She’s looking around. Where has he gone? Where has he gone? From a distance, she saw one little boy there She thinks it’s her child. She goes running - beta, beta She reaches the child and sees, Oh he’s somebody else Immediately, she becomes neutral to him. That is detached. She doesn’t say, “Now, not my child, Never mind, let me lift up this child and hug him and get motherly love from him.” Nor does she start fighting - I thought you were my child Why did you turn out to be somebody else? It was my mistake. I thought he was my child He’s not really. Forget it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=291 6 Similarly, detachment means earlier, we were thinking. The world is the source of happiness. We were running after the world. 1 million; 2 million; 3 million. Now we understood that there is no real happiness in the world. What to talk of 3 million? Those who got 30 billion are not happy. So we have become detached. We don’t start fighting - Why are you doing this? We become neutral. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=355 7 What am I supposed to do? Living in this world, I am supposed to go towards God. Let me focus upon that. Detachment means ‘Neutrality.’ Shree Krishna says that in order to develop that kind of detachment, Arjun, you will need to have a resolute intellect. In other words, your intellect will have to tell you to be firm in this knowledge that the world is not mine. The world does not have the happiness that I want. That is vyavasayatmikabuddhi - A resolute intellect The moment the intellect makes that strong decision, the work is done. You don’t need to take the mind away. The mind naturally comes away. If your intellect is not resolute, the mind will start running towards the world as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=395 8 Any of you if you so decide - No matter your favorite food item may be in front of you - If you are confirmed there is poison in it, you will never take it. If there is no poison in it, then you may break the rules of dieting. Let me take more. It doesn’t matter. The doctor is not watching. This knowledge is not resolute that this is harmful for me. That knowledge has to become firm. Knowledge is all available, it is for us to utilize it and to make a strong resolve accordingly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=487 9 One woman came to me and said, “Swamiji, baki sab to thik hai sab bahut gussa atta” Everything else is all right but I have a lot of anger in me. What should I do? Give me some gem of knowledge to destroy this I said, “Deviji, does anybody want to harm themselves?” No. Supposing, I give you a pin and say, “Jab it into your arm.” Will you do it? No. In the same way, anger harms you. You get angry at the other person but the anger resides in you. He is the object and you are the receptacle in which the anger is residing It burns your heart. It burns your blood. It dirties your mind. It’s like jabbing a 100 pins in your arm. Why should you harm yourself? The lady said, “Swamiji, that is a wonderful piece of knowledge.” I said, “But it will be no use to you.” Why? Because you don’t really believe it. When that opportunity for anger comes, this knowledge will slip out of the mind. You will make the mistake and later on, you will regret “Oh oh I became angry.” That knowledge has to be utilized by the intellect. That is vyavasayatmika buddhi - Resolute intellect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=537 10 If the intellect becomes resolute in this decision that I am not the body, I am the soul And hence the happiness I want, will not come from these things. Your mind will come off from the world in a moment. Presently, that strength of decision is not existing. We do have a general notion. How much do you struggle for the world for worldly attainments? How much do you struggle for God? That shows that at present, our decision of the intellect needs to be strengthened. Shree Krishna says here, “Arjun, if somebody can strengthen that decision towards God, his intellect will be one-pointed and the mind will come into focus. If you strengthen that decision, you will shoot towards the goal like an arrow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIKfiUR_DI&t=644 Transcript Intro 0:00 Bhagavad Gita Gyan Yagna by Swami Mukundananda 0:01 The intellect rules the mind. 0:04 God has bestowed the human intellect with the 0:07 power to control the mind if it so decides. 0:12 Shree Krishna says: If somebody can strengthen that decision, 0:18 intellect will be one-pointed and the mind will come into focus. 0:22 You will shoot towards the goal like an arrow. 0:27 Bhagavad Gita Sloka Chanting is followed by translation and commentary by Swami Mukundananda 0:34 Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 Sloka 41 Chanting 0:36 व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन | बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम् || 41|| vyavasayatmika buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-shakha hyanantash cha buddhayo ’vyavasayinam 0:54 0:57 O descendent of the Kurus, the intellect of those who are on this path is resolute, and their aim is one-pointed.
