https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM?si=WTpPGZ2SVo6ZCxu5 Full Text 1 Why do you want happiness ? It's an addiction ! it's a good try but there is something deeper, see an addiction grows but happiness is something you want from the time you were born, the first thing we did when we were born we raised a slogan, give me happiness, give me happiness, give me happiness https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=9 2 you'll say Swamiji we raised that kind of slogan when we were born ? we could not even say ABCD क ख ग घ, what was the first thing we did upon birth ? we cried, why did we cry ? because in the process of birth, we experienced misery. By crying, we revealed our nature, I have not come into this world for misery, I have come for happiness, give me happiness and from that day until today, all that we have been doing is for the sake of happiness. https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=46 3 Is there any soul who wants misery in opposition to happiness ? None, isn't that astonishing ? otherwise we are all different, our facial appearances are different, our fingerprints are different, that's the reason behind photo or bio matrics, if we all had the same fingerprints then photo or bio matrics would have served no purpose but the 7 billion people on the planet Earth have all got different fingerprints, that is the extent of variety that God has filled into this creation https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=98 4 our voices are different, people give me a call, I have just landed in America, people ring up, Radhe Radhe, Swamiji, you have reached ? yes, I've reached, who's speaking ? Swami ji, you please guess ! how will I guess ? is this a video call or FaceTime or Skype or something ? no, no, you have to guess from my voice, now the voice has got a few decibels within those few decibels, there is such variety that you can remember fifty thousand different kinds of voices and sounds, our bodily aromas are also different, you may not realize but the dog perceives it because the dog has a powerful nose. Go and meet your friend who has a dog at home, the dog sees you from far and starts barking, you go close and the dog comes to sniff you and then the dog is quiet, this smell is familiar to me, it's in my file, he's a friend of mine, so our bodily aromas are different, in other words we are all different in every way, no two trees are alike, no two leaves of a single tree are identical, such is the nature of this world, yet in the matter of happiness, we are all identical, we all have that one slogan that “I want to be happy”. https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=149 5 Now ponder again, did anybody teach us ? Look my child, you must seek happiness, it should not happen that you start running after misery like we were taught in so many ways when we were growing up, my child, speak the truth don't ever tell lies, never steal anybody's property, our parents instructed us, our teachers taught us in the same manner but did our elders instruct us while we were growing up, my child you must seek happiness ? it should not come about that you run after misery, this instruction was never given to us, please listen very carefully everybody, otherwise we did not learn even the slightest bit of knowledge without being taught, we did not even recognize our mother until we were trained that this is your mother, beta, say mummy, so we found all these elders repeatedly pointing towards that lady and telling us to say mummy, we also said mummy, in other words every little bit of knowledge we had to learn, then where did this huge chunk of knowledge come that I should make happiness as the goal of my life https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=265 6 and we do so many things in this world, varieties, completely opposite, both of them for the sake of happiness, sometimes we sit, sometimes we stand, they are both opposite activities but both are done for the sake of happiness, right now you're sitting and listening to Swamiji's lecture, are you experiencing happiness ? you know in acting just to satisfy me, you can say yes, Swami ji, but supposing I continue speaking till eleven o'clock at night, will you keep sitting ? I'll test that out at eight o'clock, you see, I've got to get up. What happened ? you were sitting for the sake of happiness, Swamiji, you have become so boring, I'm bored, sick, getting up is giving me happiness, you see doing one activity when the happiness dried up, you don't wish to do it any longer, now you wish to do the reverse but that reverse also you wish to do only because it will give you happiness. Sometimes you wake up, sometimes you go to sleep, at night you go to sleep at home. https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=380 7 Does sleeping give you happiness ? oh yes, lots of it. According to the Vedas, the highest bliss in the world is the bliss of deep sleep, not dream sleep, in dream sleep the same माड़ धाड़ continues, somebody is running after you, you are running after somebody but when you stop dreaming, at that time you don't experience anything and when you wake up you realize you say I slept so peacefully, I did not experience anything, that experience of not experiencing anything, according to the Vedas is the biggest bliss of the material realm, it is not yet the bliss of God but a glimpse of it. https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=482 8 So you enjoy sleeping ? yes, Swami ji, all right you take leave from office four days, just keep sleeping, we'll create a fund to compensate even if it's unpaid leave, you just have to sleep 12 hours, can I get up ? no, keep sleeping. 16 hours, I have to get up, no, keep sleeping, how long will I sleep, why you were saying that sleeping gives you happiness ? now I'm bored of sleeping, I need to get up, again when the activity became boring, the person wishes to do the reverse and why the reverse ? because that will now be the source of happiness, so all day long we do contradictory activities but we are searching happiness in both of them, https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=545 9 in fact we even cry for happiness. Intuitively you may feel that there is happiness in laughing and misery in crying but the vedas inform us that crying is also a pursuit of happiness. Ask somebody, why are you crying ? my father in India passed away so I went to cremate him and I came back and my mother passed away, so I went to cremate her and came back and my house got burnt. So ? My question is why are you crying , if there is misery in crying, you got the misery of your father passing away, the misery of your mother passing away, the misery of your house getting burnt, if some activity gives you unhappiness, why will you do it ? There's no rule in America that if your father has passed away you better cry otherwise you'll be put in jail for three years, then why does a person cry ? you know all that misery I got from my father passing away, mother passing away, my house getting burnt, by crying I’m taking it out, this is giving me relief, if I don't cry, I'll go crazy - so what happened ? when the misery became too much, the person is crying and experiencing relief, that means even the crying is a search for happiness https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=607 10 so we come to this conclusion that 24 hours a day, all we do is in the pursuit of happiness and the search has been going on since the time we were born - let us then try and understand why do we want happiness ? this is the defining foundational question of spirituality and the answer to this has been given in the Vedas, if you can understand why you want happiness you will automatically start going in the direction of God and if you can understand the nature of God, you will automatically understand why you want happiness https://youtu.be/aQI4ji7rhDM&t=730 Transcript 0:09 Why do you want happiness ? 0:14 It's an 0:19 addiction ! it's a good try but there is 0:24 something deeper, see an addiction grows 0:27 but happiness is something you want from 0:32 the time you were born, the first thing 0:36 we did when we were born we raised a 0:40 slogan, give me happiness, give me 0:43 happiness, give me happiness, 0:46 you'll say Swamiji we raised that kind of 0:50 slogan when we were born ? we could not 0:53 even say ABCD क ख ग घ, what was the 0:59 first thing we did upon birth ? we cried, 1:04 why did we cry ? because in the process of 1:09 birth, we experienced misery. By crying, we 1:15 revealed our nature, I have not come into 1:19 this world for misery, I have come for 1:22 happiness, give me happiness and from 1:28 that day until today, all that we have 1:33 been doing is for the sake of happiness. 1:38 Is there any soul who wants misery in 1:43 opposition to happiness ? 1:47 None, isn't that astonishing ? otherwise we 1:54 are all different, 1:55 our facial appearances are different, our 2:01 fingerprints are different, that's the 2:03 reason behind photo or bio matrics, if we all had 2:07 the same fingerprints then photo or bio matrics 2:10 would have served no purpose but the 2:13 7 billion people on the planet Earth 2:17 have all got different fingerprints, that 2:21 is the extent of 2:23 variety that God has filled into this creation, 2:29 our voices are different, people give me 2:35 a call, I have just landed in America, 2:37 people ring up, Radhe Radhe, Swamiji, 2:41 you have reached ? yes, I've reached, who's 2:44 speaking ? 2:44 Swami ji, you please guess ! how will I 2:48 guess ? is this a video call or FaceTime 2:51 or Skype or something ? no, no, you have to 2:53 guess from my voice, now the voice has 2:57 got a few decibels within those few 3:01 decibels, there is such variety that you 3:04 can remember fifty thousand different 3:07 kinds of voices and sounds, our bodily 3:13 aromas are also different, you may not 3:17 realize but the dog perceives it because the 3:22 dog has a powerful nose. Go and meet your 3:27 friend who has a dog at home, the dog 3:30 sees you from far and starts barking, you 3:35 go close and the dog comes to sniff you 3:37 and then the dog is quiet, 3:41 this smell is familiar to me, it's in my 3:44 file, he's a friend of mine, so our bodily 3:48 aromas are different, in other words we 3:52 are all different in every way, no 3:57 two trees are alike, no two leaves of a 4:02 single tree are identical, such is the 4:07 nature of this world, yet in the matter 4:12 of happiness, we are all identical, we all 4:18 have that one slogan that “I want to be happy”. 4:25 Now ponder again, did anybody teach us ? 4:32 Look my child, you must seek 4:36 happiness, it should not happen that you 4:39 start running after misery like we were 4:46 taught in so many ways when we were 4:49 growing up, my child, speak the truth 4:52 don't ever tell lies, never steal 4:56 anybody's property, 4:58 our parents instructed us, our teachers 5:03 taught us in the same manner but did our 5:06 elders instruct us while we were growing 5:09 up, my child you must seek happiness ? it 5:15 should not come about that you run after 5:17 misery, this instruction was never given 5:23 to us, please listen very carefully 5:30 everybody, otherwise we did not learn 5:37 even the slightest bit of knowledge 5:40 without being taught, 5:43 we did not even recognize our mother 5:47 until we were trained that this is your 5:51 mother, beta, say mummy, so we found all 5:56 these elders repeatedly pointing towards 6:00 that lady and telling us to say mummy, we 6:03 also said mummy, in other words every 6:09 little bit of knowledge we had to learn, 6:14 then where did this huge chunk of 6:18 knowledge come that I should make 6:20 happiness as the goal of my life and we 6:27 do so many things in this world, 6:30 varieties, completely opposite, both of 6:37 them for the sake of happiness, sometimes 6:40 we sit, sometimes we stand, 6:45 they are both opposite activities 6:49 but both are done for the sake of 6:52 happiness, right now you're sitting and 6:56 listening to Swamiji's lecture, 6:59 are you experiencing happiness ? you know 7:04 in acting just to satisfy me, you can say 7:06 yes, Swami ji, but supposing I continue 7:11 speaking till eleven o'clock at night, 7:13 will you keep sitting ? I'll test that out 7:20 at eight o'clock, you see, I've got to get 7:24 up. What happened ? 7:26 you were sitting for the sake of 7:28 happiness, Swamiji, you have become so 7:31 boring, I'm bored, sick, getting up is 7:34 giving me happiness, you see doing one 7:39 activity when the happiness dried up, 7:42 you don't wish to do it any longer, now 7:45 you wish to do the reverse but that 7:48 reverse also you wish to do only because 7:51 it will give you happiness. Sometimes you 7:56 wake up, sometimes you go to sleep, at 7:59 night you go to sleep, at home, of course, 8:02 Does sleeping give you 8:05 happiness ? oh yes, lots of it. According to 8:10 the Vedas, the highest bliss in the world 8:15 is the bliss of deep sleep, not dream 8:21 sleep, in dream sleep the same माड़ धाड़ 8:24 continues, somebody is running after 8:28 you, you are running after somebody but 8:30 when you stop dreaming, at that time you 8:33 don't experience anything and when you 8:37 wake up you realize you say I slept so peacefully, I did not experience 8:48 anything, that experience of not 8:53 experiencing anything, according to the 8:57 Vedas is the biggest bliss 8:59 of the material realm, it is not yet the 9:05 bliss of God but a glimpse of it. So you 9:11 enjoy sleeping ? yes, Swami ji, all right you 9:16 take leave from office four days, just 9:18 keep sleeping, we'll create a fund to 9:22 compensate even if it's unpaid leave, 9:24 you just have to sleep 12 hours, can I 9:28 get up ? no, keep sleeping. 16 hours, I have 9:33 to get up, no, keep sleeping, how long will I 9:37 sleep, why you were saying that sleeping 9:40 gives you happiness ? now I'm bored of 9:44 sleeping, I need to get up, again when the 9:48 activity became boring, the person wishes 9:53 to do the reverse and why the reverse ? 9:56 because that will now be the source of 10:00 happiness, so all day long we do 10:04 contradictory activities but we are 10:07 searching happiness in both of them, in 10:12 fact we even cry for happiness. 10:18 Intuitively you may feel that there is 10:22 happiness in laughing and misery in 10:26 crying but the vedas inform us that 10:32 crying is also a pursuit of happiness. 10:36 Ask somebody, why are you crying ? my 10:39 father in India passed away so I went to 10:45 cremate him and I came back and my 10:47 mother passed away, so I went to cremate 10:51 her and came back and my house got burnt. 10:54 So ? My question is why are you crying , if 11:00 there is misery in crying, you got the 11:05 misery of your father passing away, the 11:08 misery of your mother passing away, the 11:11 misery of your house 11:13 getting burnt, if some activity gives 11:16 you unhappiness, why will you do it ? 11:21 There's no rule in America that if your 11:25 father has passed away you better cry 11:27 otherwise you'll be put in jail for 11:29 three years, then why does a person cry ? 11:35 you know all that misery I got from my 11:39 father passing away, mother passing away, 11:41 my house getting burnt, by crying I’m taking 11:45 it out, this is giving me relief, if I 11:51 don't cry, I'll go crazy - so what happened ? 11:56 when the misery became too much, the 11:59 person is crying and experiencing relief, 12:05 that means even the crying is a search 12:10 for happiness so we come to this 12:14 conclusion that 24 hours a day, all we do 12:20 is in the pursuit of happiness and the 12:24 search has been going on since the time 12:28 we were born - let us then try and 12:34 understand why do we want happiness ? this 12:40 is the defining foundational question of 12:45 spirituality and the answer to this has 12:50 been given in the Vedas, if you can 12:55 understand why you want happiness you 13:00 will automatically start going in the 13:03 direction of God and if you can 13:08 understand the nature of God you will 13:13 automatically understand why you want 13:17 happiness
