GITA-SHLOKA-4.15- ONE SHOULD ENGAGE IN THE FIELD OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE SAKE OF KRSNA TO GET LIBERATION FROM BIRTH DEATH RE-CYCLING

TRANSLATION

All the liberated souls in ancient times acted with this understanding and so attained liberation. Therefore, as the ancients, you should perform your duty in this divine consciousness.

PURPORT

There are two classes of men.

Some of them are full of polluted material things within their hearts, and some of them are materially free.

Krsna consciousness is equally beneficial for both of these persons.

Those who are full of dirty things can take to the line of Krsna consciousness for a gradual cleansing process, following the regulative principles of devotional service.

Those who are already cleansed of the impurities may continue to act in the same Krsna consciousness so that others may follow their exemplary activities and thereby be benefitted.

FOOLISH PERSONS OR NEOPHYTES IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS OFTEN WANT TO RETIRE FROM ACTIVITIES WITHOUT HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

ARJUNA'S DESIRE TO RETIRE FROM ACTIVITIES ON THE BATTLEFIELD WAS NOT APPROVED BY THE LORD.

One need only know how to act.

TO RETIRE FROM THE ACTIVITIES OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS AND TO SIT ALOOF MAKING A SHOW OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS; IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN ACTUALLY ENGAGING IN THE FIELD OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE SAKE OF KRSNA.

Arjuna is here advised to act in Krsna consciousness, following in the footsteps of the Lord's previous disciples, such as the sun-god Vivasvan, as mentioned hereinbefore.

The Supreme Lord knows all His past activities, as well as those of persons who acted in Krsna consciousness in the past.

Therefore He recommends the acts of the sun-god, who learned this art from the Lord some millions of years before.

All such students of Lord Krsna are mentioned here as past liberated persons, engaged in the discharge of duties allotted by Krsna.

BHAGVAT IF A HUMAN BEING IS BORN IN AN ARISTOCRATIC FAMILY, IF HE PERFORMS WONDERFUL ACTIVITIES, IF HE IS YOUTHFUL, IF HE HAS PERSONAL BEAUTY, A GOOD EDUCATION AND GOOD WEALTH, AND IF HE IS NONETHELESS NOT PROUD OF HIS OPULENCES, IT IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD THAT HE IS ESPECIALLY FAVORED BY THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, 29TH JULY

TRANSLATION

IF A HUMAN BEING IS BORN IN AN ARISTOCRATIC FAMILY OR A HIGHER STATUS OF LIFE, IF HE PERFORMS WONDERFUL ACTIVITIES, IF HE IS YOUTHFUL, IF HE HAS PERSONAL BEAUTY, A GOOD EDUCATION AND GOOD WEALTH, AND IF HE IS NONETHELESS NOT PROUD OF HIS OPULENCES, IT IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD THAT HE IS ESPECIALLY FAVORED BY THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD.

PURPORT

WHEN IN SPITE OF POSSESSING ALL THESE OPULENCES A PERSON IS NOT PROUD, THIS MEANS THAT HE IS FULLY AWARE THAT ALL HIS OPULENCES ARE DUE TO THE MERCY OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD. HE THEREFORE ENGAGES ALL HIS POSSESSIONS IN THE SERVICE OF THE LORD. A DEVOTEE KNOWS VERY WELL THAT EVERYTHING, EVEN HIS BODY, BELONGS TO THE SUPREME LORD. 

IF ONE LIVES PERFECTLY IN SUCH KRSHNA CONSCIOUSNESS, IT IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD THAT HE IS ESPECIALLY FAVORED BY THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD. THE CONCLUSION IS THAT ONE'S BEING DEPRIVED OF HIS WEALTH IS NOT TO BE CONSIDERED THE SPECIAL MERCY OF THE LORD. IF ONE CONTINUES IN HIS OPULENT POSITION BUT DOES NOT BECOME UNNECESSARILY PROUD, FALSELY THINKING THAT HE IS THE PROPRIETOR OF EVERYTHING, THIS IS THE LORD'S SPECIAL MERCY.

TRANSLATION

ALTHOUGH ARISTOCRATIC BIRTH AND OTHER SUCH OPULENCES ARE IMPEDIMENTS TO ADVANCEMENT IN DEVOTIONAL SERVICE BECAUSE THEY ARE CAUSES OF FALSE PRESTIGE AND PRIDE, THESE OPULENCES NEVER DISTURB A PURE DEVOTEE OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD.

PURPORT

DEVOTEES LIKE DHRUVA MAHARAJA, WHO WAS GIVEN UNLIMITED MATERIAL OPULENCE, HAVE THE SPECIAL MERCY OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD. ONCE KUVERA WANTED TO GIVE DHRUVA MAHARAJA A BENEDICTION, BUT ALTHOUGH DHRUVA MAHARAJA COULD HAVE ASKED HIM FOR ANY AMOUNT OF MATERIAL OPULENCE, HE INSTEAD BEGGED KUVERA THAT HE MIGHT CONTINUE HIS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE TO THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD. 

WHEN A DEVOTEE IS FIXED IN HIS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE, THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE LORD TO DEPRIVE HIM OF HIS MATERIAL OPULENCES. 

The Supreme Personality of Godhead never takes away material opulences achieved because of devotional service, although He sometimes takes away opulences achieved by pious activities. He does this to make a devotee prideless or put him in a better position in devotional service. If a special devotee is meant for preaching but does not give up his family life or material opulences to take to the service of the Lord, the Lord surely takes away his material opulences and establishes him in devotional service. Thus the pure devotee becomes fully engaged in propagating Krshna consciousness.

Bhagvatam:- If one desires all opulences, his duty is to daily worship Lord Vishnu with His wife, Lakshmi. With great devotion one should worship Him according to the above-mentioned process. Lord Vishnu and the goddess of fortune are an immensely powerful combination, 2nd Sept

Bhagvatam:- If one desires all opulences, his duty is to daily worship Lord Vishnu with His wife, Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu and the goddess of fortune are an immensely powerful combination. They are the bestowers of all benedictions and the sources of all good fortune. Therefore the duty of everyone is to worship Lakshmi-Näräyana.

TRANSLATION

[After profusely offering obeisances unto Lord Vishnu, the devotee should offer respectful obeisances unto mother Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, and pray as follows.]

O wife of Lord Vishnu, O internal energy of Lord Vishnu, you are as good as Lord Vishnu Himself, for you have all of His qualities and opulences.

O goddess of fortune, please be kind to me. O mother of the entire world, I offer my respectful obeisances unto you.

PURPORT

The Lord has multifarious potencies (paräsya shaktir vividhaiva shrüyate).

Since mother Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, is the Lord's very precious potency, she is addressed here as mahä-mäye.

The word mäyä means shakti.

Lord Vishnu, the Supreme, cannot exhibit His power everywhere without His principal energy.

It is said, shakti shaktimän abheda: the power and the powerful are identical.

Therefore mother Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, is the constant companion of Lord Vishnu; they remain together constantly.

One cannot keep Lakshmi in one's home without Lord Vishnu.

To think that one can do so is very dangerous.

To keep Lakshmi, or the riches of the Lord, without the service of the Lord is always dangerous, for then Lakshmi becomes the illusory energy.

With Lord Vishnu, however, Lakshmi is the spiritual energy.

TRANSLATION

"My Lord Vishnu, full in six opulences, You are the best of all enjoyers and the most powerful. O husband of mother Lakshmi, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, who are accompanied by many associates, such as Vishvaksena. I offer all the paraphernalia for worshiping You." One should chant this mantra every day with great attention while worshiping Lord Vishnu with all paraphernalia, such as water for washing His feet, hands and mouth and water for His bath. One must offer Him various presentations for His worship, such as garments, a sacred thread, ornaments, scents, flowers, incense and lamps.

PURPORT

This mantra is very important. Anyone engaged in Deity worship should chant this mantra, as quoted above, beginning with om namo bhagavate mahä-purushäya.

TRANSLATION

Sukadeva Gosvämi continued: After worshiping the Lord with all the paraphernalia mentioned above, one should chant the following mantra while offering twelve oblations of ghee on the sacred fire: om namo bhagavate mahä-purushäya mahävibhüti-pataye svähä.

TRANSLATION

If one desires all opulences, his duty is to daily worship Lord Vishnu with His wife, Lakshmi. With great devotion one should worship Him according to the above-mentioned process. Lord Vishnu and the goddess of fortune are an immensely powerful combination. They are the bestowers of all benedictions and the sources of all good fortune. Therefore the duty of everyone is to worship Lakshmi-Näräyana.

PURPORT

Lakshmi-Näräyana—Lord Vishnu and mother Lakshmi—are always situated in everyone's heart (ishvaram sarva-bhütänäm hrd-deshe 'rjuna tishthati). However, because nondevotees do not realize that Lord Vishnu stays with His eternal consort, Lakshmi, within the hearts of all living entities, they are not endowed with the opulence of Lord Vishnu. 

Unscrupulous men sometimes address a poor man as daridra-näräyana, or "poor Näräyana." 

This is most unscientific. Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi are always situated in everyone's heart, but this does not mean that everyone is Näräyana, especially not those in poverty. This is a most abominable term to use in connection with Näräyana. Näräyana never becomes poor, and therefore He can never be called daridra-näräyana. Näräyana is certainly situated in everyone's heart, but He is neither poor nor rich. Only unscrupulous persons who do not know the opulence of Näräyana try to afflict Him with poverty.

GITA-SHLOKA-4.14- ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THIS TRUTH ABOUT TRANSCENDENTAL NATURE OF GOD ALSO DOES NOT BECOME ENTANGLED IN THE FRUITIVE REACTIONS OF WORK (& CONSEQUENT RE-BIRTH & DEATH CYCLE)

TRANSLATION

THERE IS NO WORK THAT AFFECTS ME; NOR DO I ASPIRE FOR THE FRUITS OF ACTION. ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THIS TRUTH ABOUT ME ALSO DOES NOT BECOME ENTANGLED IN THE FRUITIVE REACTIONS OF WORK.

PURPORT

As there are constitutional laws in the material world stating that the king can do no wrong, or that the king is not subject to the state laws, similarly the Lord, although He is the creator of this material world, is not affected by the activities of the material world.

He creates and remains aloof from the creation, whereas the living entities are entangled in the fruitive results of material activities because of their propensity for lording it over material resources.

THE PROPRIETOR OF AN ESTABLISHMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RIGHT AND WRONG ACTIVITIES OF THE WORKERS, BUT THE WORKERS ARE THEMSELVES RESPONSIBLE.

THE LIVING ENTITIES ARE ENGAGED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE ACTIVITIES OF SENSE GRATIFICATION, AND THESE ACTIVITIES ARE NOT ORDAINED BY THE LORD.

FOR ADVANCEMENT OF SENSE GRATIFICATION, THE LIVING ENTITIES ARE ENGAGED IN THE WORK OF THIS WORLD, AND THEY ASPIRE TO HEAVENLY HAPPINESS AFTER DEATH.

The Lord, being full in Himself, has no attraction for so-called heavenly happiness.

THE HEAVENLY DEMIGODS ARE ONLY HIS ENGAGED SERVANTS.

THE PROPRIETOR NEVER DESIRES THE LOW-GRADE HAPPINESS SUCH AS THE WORKERS MAY DESIRE.

HE IS ALOOF FROM THE MATERIAL ACTIONS AND REACTIONS.

FOR EXAMPLE, THE RAINS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF VEGETATION THAT APPEAR ON THE EARTH, ALTHOUGH WITHOUT SUCH RAINS THERE IS NO POSSIBILITY OF VEGETATIVE GROWTH.

Vedic smrti confirms this fact as follows:

nimitta-matram evasau srjyanam sarga-karmani

pradhana-karani-bhuta yato vai srjya-saktayah

IN THE MATERIAL CREATIONS, THE LORD IS ONLY THE SUPREME CAUSE.

The immediate cause is material nature by which the cosmic manifestation is visible.

THE CREATED BEINGS ARE OF MANY VARIETIES, SUCH AS THE DEMIGODS, HUMAN BEINGS AND LOWER ANIMALS, AND ALL OF THEM ARE SUBJECT TO THE REACTIONS OF THEIR PAST GOOD OR BAD ACTIVITIES.

The Lord only gives them the proper facilities for such activities and the regulations of the modes of nature, but He is never responsible for their past and present activities.

In the Vedanta-sutras it is confirmed that the Lord is never partial to any living entity.

The living entity is responsible for his own acts.

THE LORD ONLY GIVES HIM FACILITIES, THROUGH THE AGENCY OF MATERIAL NATURE, THE EXTERNAL ENERGY.

Anyone who is fully conversant with all the intricacies of this law of karma, or fruitive activities, does not become affected by the results of his activities.

IN OTHER WORDS, THE PERSON WHO UNDERSTANDS THIS TRANSCENDENTAL NATURE OF THE LORD IS AN EXPERIENCED MAN IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS, AND THUS HE IS NEVER SUBJECTED TO THE LAWS OF KARMA.

ONE WHO DOES NOT KNOW THE TRANSCENDENTAL NATURE OF THE LORD AND WHO THINKS THAT THE ACTIVITIES OF THE LORD ARE AIMED AT FRUITIVE RESULTS, AS ARE THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ORDINARY LIVING ENTITIES, CERTAINLY BECOMES ENTANGLED HIMSELF IN FRUITIVE REACTION.

BUT ONE WHO KNOWS THE SUPREME TRUTH IS A LIBERATED SOUL FIXED IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

GITA-SHLOKA-4.13- the four divisions of human society were created by God - BRAHMANAS , KSATRIYAS , VAISYAS ,SUDRAS BUT ONLY A MAN WHO TRANSCENDS THE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF A BRAHMANA  AND REACHES THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, LORD SRI KRSNA, BECOMES A PERSON IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS—OR, IN OTHER WORDS, A VAISNAVA  28th July

TRANSLATION

According to the three modes of material nature and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by Me. And, although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable.

PURPORT

THE LORD IS THE CREATOR OF EVERYTHING.

EVERYTHING IS BORN OF HIM, EVERYTHING IS SUSTAINED BY HIM, AND EVERYTHING, AFTER ANNIHILATION, RESTS IN HIM.

HE IS THEREFORE THE CREATOR OF THE FOUR DIVISIONS OF THE SOCIAL ORDER, BEGINNING WITH THE INTELLIGENT CLASS OF MEN, TECHNICALLY CALLED BRAHMANAS DUE TO THEIR BEING SITUATED IN THE MODE OF GOODNESS.

NEXT IS THE ADMINISTRATIVE CLASS, TECHNICALLY CALLED THE KSATRIYAS DUE TO THEIR BEING SITUATED IN THE MODE OF PASSION.

THE MERCANTILE MEN, CALLED THE VAISYAS, ARE SITUATED IN THE MIXED MODES OF PASSION AND IGNORANCE, AND THE SUDRAS, OR LABORER CLASS, ARE SITUATED IN THE IGNORANT MODE OF MATERIAL NATURE.

In spite of His creating the four divisions of human society, Lord Krsna does not belong to any of these divisions, because He is not one of the conditioned souls, a section of whom form human society.

HUMAN SOCIETY IS SIMILAR TO ANY OTHER ANIMAL SOCIETY, BUT TO ELEVATE MEN FROM THE ANIMAL STATUS, THE ABOVEMENTIONED DIVISIONS ARE CREATED BY THE LORD FOR THE SYSTEMATIC DEVELOPMENT OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

THE TENDENCY OF A PARTICULAR MAN TOWARD WORK IS DETERMINED BY THE MODES OF MATERIAL NATURE WHICH HE HAS ACQUIRED.

Such symptoms of life, according to different modes of material nature, are described in the Eighteenth Chapter of this book.

A PERSON IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS, HOWEVER, IS ABOVE EVEN THE BRAHMANAS, BECAUSE A BRAHMANA BY QUALITY IS SUPPOSED TO KNOW ABOUT BRAHMAN, THE SUPREME ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

Most of them approach the impersonal Brahman manifestation of Lord Krsna, but ONLY A MAN WHO TRANSCENDS THE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF A BRAHMANA AND REACHES THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, LORD SRI KRSNA, BECOMES A PERSON IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS—OR, IN OTHER WORDS, A VAISNAVA.

Krsna consciousness includes knowledge of all different plenary expansions of Krsna, namely Rama, Nrsimha, Varaha, etc.

However, as Krsna is transcendental to this system of the four divisions of human society, a person in Krsna consciousness is also transcendental to all divisions of human society, whether we consider the divisions of community, nation or species.

BHAGVAT GOD SAID: “MY DEAR LORD BRAHMA, BECAUSE OF MATERIAL OPULENCE A FOOLISH PERSON BECOMES DULL-WITTED AND MAD , 28TH JULY

BHAGVAT GOD SAID: “MY DEAR LORD BRAHMA, BECAUSE OF MATERIAL OPULENCE A FOOLISH PERSON BECOMES DULL-WITTED AND MAD. THUS HE HAS NO RESPECT FOR ANYONE WITHIN THE THREE WORLDS AND DEFIES EVEN MY AUTHORITY. TO SUCH A PERSON I SHOW SPECIAL FAVOR BY FIRST TAKING AWAY ALL HIS POSSESSIONS”, 28TH JULY

TRANSLATION

THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD SAID: MY DEAR LORD BRAHMA, BECAUSE OF MATERIAL OPULENCE A FOOLISH PERSON BECOMES DULL-WITTED AND MAD. THUS HE HAS NO RESPECT FOR ANYONE WITHIN THE THREE WORLDS AND DEFIES EVEN MY AUTHORITY. TO SUCH A PERSON I SHOW SPECIAL FAVOR BY FIRST TAKING AWAY ALL HIS POSSESSIONS.

PURPORT

A CIVILIZATION THAT HAS BECOME GODLESS BECAUSE OF MATERIAL ADVANCEMENT IN OPULENCE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. BECAUSE OF GREAT OPULENCE, A MATERIALIST BECOMES SO PROUD THAT HE HAS NO REGARD FOR ANYONE AND EVEN REFUSES TO ACCEPT THE AUTHORITY OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD. THE RESULT OF SUCH A MENTALITY IS CERTAINLY VERY DANGEROUS. TO SHOW SPECIAL FAVOR, THE LORD SOMETIMES MAKES AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE LIKE BALI MAHARAJA, WHO WAS NOW BEREFT OF ALL HIS POSSESSIONS.

TRANSLATION

WHILE ROTATING IN THE CYCLE OF BIRTH AND DEATH AGAIN AND AGAIN IN DIFFERENT SPECIES BECAUSE OF HIS OWN FRUITIVE ACTIVITIES, THE DEPENDENT LIVING ENTITY, BY GOOD FORTUNE, MAY HAPPEN TO BECOME A HUMAN BEING. THIS HUMAN BIRTH IS VERY RARELY OBTAINED.

PURPORT

THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD IS FULLY INDEPENDENT. THUS IT IS NOT ALWAYS A FACT THAT A LIVING BEING'S LOSS OF ALL OPULENCE IS A SIGN OF THE SUPREME LORD'S MERCY UPON HIM. THE LORD CAN ACT ANY WAY HE LIKES. HE MAY TAKE AWAY ONE'S OPULENCE, OR HE MAY NOT. THERE ARE VARIETIES OF FORMS OF LIFE, AND THE LORD TREATS THEM ACCORDING TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES, AS HE CHOOSES. GENERALLY IT IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD THAT THE HUMAN FORM OF LIFE IS ONE OF GREAT RESPONSIBILITY.

"THE LIVING ENTITY IN MATERIAL NATURE FOLLOWS THE WAYS OF LIFE, ENJOYING THE THREE MODES OF NATURE. THIS IS DUE TO HIS ASSOCIATION WITH THAT MATERIAL NATURE. THUS HE MEETS WITH GOOD AND EVIL AMONGST VARIOUS SPECIES." (BG. 13.22) AFTER THUS ROTATING THROUGH MANY, MANY FORMS OF LIFE IN THE CYCLE OF BIRTH AND DEATH, THE LIVING BEING GETS A CHANCE FOR A HUMAN FORM. THEREFORE EVERY HUMAN BEING, ESPECIALLY ONE BELONGING TO A CIVILIZED NATION OR CULTURE, MUST BE EXTREMELY RESPONSIBLE IN HIS ACTIVITIES. 

HE SHOULD NOT RISK DEGRADATION IN THE NEXT LIFE. BECAUSE THE BODY WILL CHANGE (tatha dehantara-praptir), WE SHOULD BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL. TO SEE TO THE PROPER USE OF LIFE IS THE PURPOSE OF KRSHNA CONSCIOUSNESS. THE FOOLISH LIVING ENTITY DECLARES FREEDOM FROM ALL CONTROL, BUT FACTUALLY HE IS NOT FREE; HE IS FULLY UNDER THE CONTROL OF MATERIAL NATURE. HE MUST THEREFORE BE MOST CAREFUL AND RESPONSIBLE IN THE ACTIVITIES OF HIS LIFE.

GITA-SHLOKA-4.12 THE DEMIGODS ARE NOT DIFFERENT FORMS OF GOD, BUT THEY ARE GOD'S DIFFERENT PARTS AND PARCELS. GOD IS ONE, AND THE PARTS AND PARCELS ARE MANY. ANYONE WHO THINKS THAT GOD AND THE DEMIGODS ARE ON THE SAME LEVEL IS CALLED AN ATHEIST 27th July

TRANSLATION

MEN IN THIS WORLD DESIRE SUCCESS IN FRUITIVE ACTIVITIES, AND THEREFORE THEY WORSHIP THE DEMIGODS.  QUICKLY, OF COURSE, MEN GET RESULTS FROM FRUITIVE WORK IN THIS WORLD.

PURPORT

THERE IS A GREAT MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE GODS OR DEMIGODS OF THIS MATERIAL WORLD, AND MEN OF LESS INTELLIGENCE, ALTHOUGH PASSING AS GREAT SCHOLARS, TAKE THESE DEMIGODS TO BE VARIOUS FORMS OF THE SUPREME LORD.

ACTUALLY, THE DEMIGODS ARE NOT DIFFERENT FORMS OF GOD, BUT THEY ARE GOD'S DIFFERENT PARTS AND PARCELS.

GOD IS ONE, AND THE PARTS AND PARCELS ARE MANY.

THE VEDAS SAY, NITYO NITYANAM: GOD IS ONE.

Isvarah paramah krsnah.

THE SUPREME GOD IS ONE—KRSNA—AND THE DEMIGODS ARE DELEGATED WITH POWERS TO MANAGE THIS MATERIAL WORLD.

THESE DEMIGODS ARE ALL LIVING ENTITIES (NITYANAM) WITH DIFFERENT GRADES OF MATERIAL POWER.

THEY CANNOT BE EQUAL TO THE SUPREME GOD—NARAYANA, VISNU, OR KRSNA.

ANYONE WHO THINKS THAT GOD AND THE DEMIGODS ARE ON THE SAME LEVEL IS CALLED AN ATHEIST, OR pasandi.

EVEN THE GREAT DEMIGODS LIKE BRAHMA AND SIVA CANNOT BE COMPARED TO THE SUPREME LORD.

IN FACT, THE LORD IS WORSHIPED BY DEMIGODS SUCH AS BRAHMA AND SIVA (SIVA-VIRINCI-NUTAM).

YET CURIOUSLY ENOUGH THERE ARE MANY HUMAN LEADERS WHO ARE WORSHIPED BY FOOLISH MEN UNDER THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF ANTHROPOMORPHISM OR ZOOMORPHISM.

Iha devatah denotes a powerful man or demigod of this material world.

But Narayana, Visnu or Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, does not belong to this world.

He is above, or transcendental to, material creation.

Even Sripada Sankaracarya, the leader of the impersonalists, maintains that Narayana, or Krsna, is beyond this material creation.

HOWEVER, FOOLISH PEOPLE (hrt-anjana) WORSHIP THE DEMIGODS BECAUSE THEY WANT IMMEDIATE RESULTS.

THEY GET THE RESULTS, BUT DO NOT KNOW THAT RESULTS SO OBTAINED ARE TEMPORARY AND ARE MEANT FOR LESS INTELLIGENT PERSONS.

THE INTELLIGENT PERSON IS IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS, AND HE HAS NO NEED TO WORSHIP THE PALTRY DEMIGODS FOR SOME IMMEDIATE, TEMPORARY BENEFIT.

THE DEMIGODS OF THIS MATERIAL WORLD, AS WELL AS THEIR WORSHIPERS, WILL VANISH WITH THE ANNIHILATION OF THIS MATERIAL WORLD.

THE BOONS OF THE DEMIGODS ARE MATERIAL AND TEMPORARY.

BOTH THE MATERIAL WORLDS AND THEIR INHABITANTS, INCLUDING THE DEMIGODS, AND THEIR WORSHIPERS, ARE BUBBLES IN THE COSMIC OCEAN.

IN THIS WORLD, HOWEVER, HUMAN SOCIETY IS MAD AFTER TEMPORARY THINGS SUCH AS THE MATERIAL OPULENCE OF POSSESSING LAND, FAMILY AND ENJOYABLE PARAPHERNALIA.

TO ACHIEVE SUCH TEMPORARY THINGS, THEY WORSHIP THE DEMIGODS OR POWERFUL MEN IN HUMAN SOCIETY.

IF A MAN GETS SOME MINISTERSHIP IN THE GOVERNMENT BY WORSHIPING A POLITICAL LEADER, HE CONSIDERS THAT HE HAS ACHIEVED A GREAT BOON.

All of them are therefore kowtowing to the so-called leaders or "big guns" in order to achieve temporary boons, and they indeed achieve such things.

SUCH FOOLISH MEN ARE NOT INTERESTED IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS FOR THE PERMANENT SOLUTION TO THE HARDSHIPS OF MATERIAL EXISTENCE.

THEY ARE ALL AFTER SENSE ENJOYMENT, AND TO GET A LITTLE FACILITY FOR SENSE ENJOYMENT THEY ARE ATTRACTED TO WORSHIP EMPOWERED LIVING ENTITIES KNOWN AS DEMIGODS.

THIS VERSE INDICATES THAT PEOPLE ARE RARELY INTERESTED IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

THEY ARE MOSTLY INTERESTED IN MATERIAL ENJOYMENT, AND THEREFORE THEY WORSHIP SOME POWERFUL LIVING ENTITY.

यह भजन करना भी अपनी भूल स्वीकार करना जैसे है कि प्रभु मेरी अज्ञानता से मुझे अभी तक कि ज्ञात नहीं था कि जीवन केवल आपके भजन के लिए मिला है

मगर अब मैं जान गया हूं कि तुम्हारी इच्छा के बिना एक पत्ता भी नहीं हिल सकता है 

प्रभु के सन्मुख अपनी भूल स्वीकार कर लेना ही सुख का स्रोत है 

You must have noticed that if you admit your mistake then you start feeling light & energetic.

Singing glories of Lord is like accepting our ignorance, our mistake that due to my तमोगुण (lazy and negative attitude), I was not aware that our human life is meant only to find our way back to You which is only possible through Your grace.

Therefore, please accept my grateful surrender at Your lotus feet.

Herein lies the real & eternal happiness

GITA-SHLOKA-4.11- ONE SHOULD WITH ALL EFFORTS TRY TO WORSHIP THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD FOR COMPLETE PERFECTION, CULMINATING IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS 26th July

TRANSLATION

ALL OF THEM—AS THEY SURRENDER UNTO ME—I REWARD ACCORDINGLY. EVERYONE FOLLOWS MY PATH IN ALL RESPECTS, O SON OF PARTHA.

PURPORT

EVEYONE IS SEARCHING FOR KRSNA IN THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF HIS MANIFESTATIONS.

KRSNA, THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, IS PARTIALLY REALIZED IN HIS IMPERSONAL BRAHMAJYOTI EFFULGENCE AND AS THE ALL-PERVADING SUPERSOUL DWELLING WITHIN EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE PARTICLES OF ATOMS.

BUT KRSNA IS ONLY FULLY REALIZED BY HIS PURE DEVOTEES.

CONSEQUENTLY, KRSNA IS THE OBJECT OF EVERYONE'S REALIZATION, AND THUS ANYONE AND EVERYONE IS SATISFIED ACCORDING TO ONE'S DESIRE TO HAVE HIM.

IN THE TRANSCENDENTAL WORLD ALSO, KRSNA RECIPROCATES WITH HIS PURE DEVOTEES IN THE TRANSCENDENTAL ATTITUDE, JUST AS THE DEVOTEE WANTS HIM.

ONE DEVOTEE MAY WANT KRSNA AS SUPREME MASTER, ANOTHER AS HIS PERSONAL FRIEND, ANOTHER AS HIS SON, AND STILL ANOTHER AS HIS LOVER.

KRSNA REWARDS ALL THE DEVOTEES EQUALLY, ACCORDING TO THEIR DIFFERENT INTENSITIES OF LOVE FOR HIM.

IN THE MATERIAL WORLD, THE SAME RECIPROCATIONS OF FEELINGS ARE THERE, AND THEY ARE EQUALLY EXCHANGED BY THE LORD WITH THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WORSHIPERS.

THE PURE DEVOTEES BOTH HERE AND IN THE TRANSCENDENTAL ABODE ASSOCIATE WITH HIM IN PERSON AND ARE ABLE TO RENDER PERSONAL SERVICE TO THE LORD AND THUS DERIVE TRANSCENDENTAL BLISS IN HIS LOVING SERVICE.

As for those who are impersonalists and who want to commit spiritual suicide by annihilating the individual existence of the living entity, Krsna helps also by absorbing them into His effulgence.

SUCH IMPERSONALISTS DO NOT AGREE TO ACCEPT THE ETERNAL, BLISSFUL PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD; CONSEQUENTLY THEY CANNOT RELISH THE BLISS OF TRANSCENDENTAL PERSONAL SERVICE TO THE LORD, HAVING EXTINGUISHED THEIR INDIVIDUALITY.

Some of them, who are not situated even in the impersonal existence, return to this material field to exhibit their dormant desires for activities.

THEY ARE NOT ADMITTED IN THE SPIRITUAL PLANETS, BUT THEY ARE AGAIN GIVEN A CHANCE TO ACT ON THE MATERIAL PLANETS.

For those who are fruitive workers, the Lord awards the desired results of their prescribed duties, as the yajnesvara; and those who are yogis seeking mystic powers are awarded such powers.

IN OTHER WORDS, EVERYONE IS DEPENDANT FOR SUCCESS UPON HIS MERCY ALONE, AND ALL KINDS OF SPIRITUAL PROCESSES ARE BUT DIFFERENT DEGREES OF SUCCESS ON THE SAME PATH.

UNLESS, THEREFORE, ONE COMES TO THE HIGHEST PERFECTION OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS, ALL ATTEMPTS REMAIN IMPERFECT, AS IS STATED IN THE SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM:

akamah sarva-kamo va moksa-kama udaradhih

tivrena bhakti-yogena yajeta purusam param

"WHETHER ONE IS WITHOUT DESIRE [THE CONDITION OF THE DEVOTEES], OR IS DESIROUS OF ALL FRUITIVE RESULTS, OR IS AFTER LIBERATION, ONE SHOULD WITH ALL EFFORTS TRY TO WORSHIP THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD FOR COMPLETE PERFECTION, CULMINATING IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS." (Bhag. 2.3.10)

आत्म कल्याण का प्रयास, आत्म कल्याण आपके मेरे हाथ में नहीं है कल्याण तो तभी होगा, जब प्रभु चाहेंगे प्रयास आपके मेरे हाथ में है 

हम प्रभु से कल्याण कराना चाहते हैं, बिना प्रयास के 

we all want to get God's grace, without making any effort

अभी दो पांच महीना हुआ नहीं भजन करते और भजन के परिणाम की चिंता है 

it's hardly been 2-5 months since we started bhajans & we are worried that good result has not followed

ये तो भगवान की हम पर बहुत बड़ी कृपा है कि आपको अपनी पूर्व जन्मों की यात्रा स्मरण नहीं है 

it is God's extreme grace that we do not remember trajectory of our countless past births 

जैसे जैसे भजन करते हैं, जैसे जैसे अंतर्मन निर्मल होता है, जैसे जैसे मन का मुकुर (दर्पण, mirror) साफ़ होता है और जीव को अपने अस्तित्व का पूर्ण रूपेण बोध होता है 

as we go on bhajan path, our conscience gets clearer, more & more cleaned off the thick layers of "dust “(sins/habit of being away from even talk of God) & we start getting true overall picture of our real existential constitutional situation

जिसने जीवन में भजन का आरम्भ कर दिया है आत्म कल्याण के लिए, भगवत प्राप्ति के लिए, भगवत अनुराग प्राप्ति के लिए 

whoever has started treading the path of bhajan, for self upliftment spiritually, only for getting love of God... 

वो इतना तो विश्वास रखे कि उस पर भगवान की कृपा दृष्टि तो है 

he must rest assured that he is definitely a recipient of God's grace 

वो भगवान की कृपा दृष्टि में है, तभी जीवन में ये क्षण आया है 

& only due to God's benevolence on him, such an auspicious period has come in his life

संसार के एक से एक क्षुद्र से क्षुद्र प्रलोभन में इतनी सामर्थ है, कि वो आपको अनंत काल तक बांधे रख सकता है अपने साथ 

otherwise, the world's smallest & meanest of pleasures have such a potency that it can keep on "binding “you for ages & ages of repeated births 

इसीलिए भगवान कहते हैं "मम (Mine) माया दुरत्यया” 

hard to traverse, very difficult to cross over

कितने कितने कितने जन्मों से संसार भोगा है, (for innumerable births, we've been indulging deep in the meanest of wordly pleasures) 

और जितना भजन आप और मैं करते हैं या कर रहें हैं ,उतना तो कैसा है जैसे खारे पानी के कुँए में आप एक चुटकी मीठा डाल दें, 

& the extent of bhajan that we do is like mixing a spoon of sugar in the well full of brackish water

उससे क्या होगा, जल तो मीठा नहीं होगा, 

"ऐसी भक्ति करे, बहुकाल” 

with this, the well water cannot get sweet/potable - so the extent of bhajans has to be over a very long period, to have any positive effect) 

WHOEVER LISTENS TO GOD's KATHA, IS ACTUALLY PERFORMING A GIGANTIC YAGNA #Blog0067

whoever listens to God's katha, is actually performing a gigantic yagna

आप केवल सुनिए, सुनने का प्रयास करिये, इतना तो आप से अपेक्षित है, भई आप को चल कर तो सत्संग में आना होगा 

you are only supposed to listen, at least this much is expected of you - to come to Satsang

आप कहेंगे कि TV में कथा देख लेंगे

you say that the same can be watched in TV also

TV की कथा TV की गंगा जैसी है, दर्शन तो हो जाता है, स्मरण भी हो जाता है 

TV katha is like seeing Ganga in TV, though you can see it & you can recall it 

लेकिन गंगा की जो शीतलता है, गंगा की जो पवित्रता है, गंगा की जो निर्मलता है 

but coolness of Ganga, its purity & its Transparency/Pureness/Whiteness/ Openness power cannot be felt on TV

तन का ताप ,गंगा जी का चित्र देख कर दूर नहीं होता, उसके लिए तो गंगा जी का प्रकट रूप से सेवन करना चाहिए 

the body heat cannot be extinguished by only seeing Ganga on TV but you have to actually take a dip in it

जब आप कथा श्रवण करते हैं, तो भगवान आपके ह्रदय में अपना स्थान बनाते हैं 

when you listen attentively & lovingly to God's katha, God positions Himself in your heart 

कथा सुनने बैठिये ऐसे की आपको प्रभु को अपने ह्रदय में आसन देना है 

your attitude while listening to katha should be with sincere intent to make way for God to seat Himself in your heart 

जो श्रवण कर रहा है ,वो बहुत बड़ा यज्ञ कर रहा है 

whoever listens to God's katha, is actually performing a gigantic yagna

BHAGVAT EVERY DEVOTEE IN KRSHNA CONSCIOUSNESS SHOULD ALWAYS BE AFRAID OF THE COMMON MAN ENGAGED IN PURSUING MATERIAL PROSPERITY. SUCH A PERSON IS DESCRIBED AS PRAMATTA, A MADMAN CHASING THE WILL-O'-THE-WISP  25TH JULY

TRANSLATION

Only by providence have I been forcibly brought under Your lotus feet and deprived of all my opulence. Because of the illusion created by temporary opulence, people in general, who live under material conditions, facing accidental death at every moment, do not understand that this life is temporary. Only by providence have I been saved from that condition.

PURPORT

Bali Maharaja appreciated the actions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although all the members of the demoniac families except Prahlada Maharaja and Bali Maharaja considered Vishnu their eternal traditional enemy. As described by Bali Maharaja, Lord Vishnu was actually not the enemy of the family but the best friend of the family. 

The principle of this friendship has already been stated. Yasyaham anugrhnami harishye tad-dhanam shanaim: the Lord bestows special favor upon His devotee by taking away all his material opulences. Bali Maharaja appreciated this behavior by the Lord. Therefore he said, daivena nitam prasabham tyajita-shrim: "It is to bring me to the right platform of eternal life that You have put me into these circumstances."

ACTUALLY, EVERYONE SHOULD FEAR THE SO-CALLED SOCIETY, FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE FOR WHICH HE WORKS SO HARD ALL DAY AND NIGHT. 

AS INDICATED BY BALI MAHARAJA BY THE WORDS JANAD BHITAM, EVERY DEVOTEE IN KRSHNA CONSCIOUSNESS SHOULD ALWAYS BE AFRAID OF THE COMMON MAN ENGAGED IN PURSUING MATERIAL PROSPERITY. SUCH A PERSON IS DESCRIBED AS PRAMATTA, A MADMAN CHASING THE WILL-O'-THE-WISP. 

SUCH MEN DO NOT KNOW THAT AFTER A HARD STRUGGLE FOR LIFE ONE MUST CHANGE HIS BODY, WITH NO CERTAINTY OF WHAT KIND OF BODY HE WILL RECEIVE NEXT. THOSE WHO ARE COMPLETELY ESTABLISHED IN KRSHNA CONSCIOUS PHILOSOPHY AND WHO THEREFORE UNDERSTAND THE AIM OF LIFE WILL NEVER TAKE TO THE ACTIVITIES OF THE MATERIALISTIC DOG RACE. 

BUT IF A SINCERE DEVOTEE SOMEHOW DOES FALL DOWN, THE LORD CORRECTS HIM AND SAVES HIM FROM GLIDING DOWN TO THE DARKEST REGION OF HELLISH LIFE.

THE MATERIALISTIC WAY OF LIFE IS NOTHING BUT THE REPEATED CHEWING OF THAT WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN CHEWED. ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO PROFIT IN SUCH A LIFE, PEOPLE ARE ENAMORED OF IT BECAUSE OF UNCONTROLLED SENSES. Nünam pramattam kurute vikarma. 

BECAUSE OF UNCONTROLLED SENSES, PEOPLE FULLY ENGAGE IN SINFUL ACTIVITIES BY WHICH THEY GET A BODY FULL OF SUFFERING. BALI MAHARAJA APPRECIATED HOW THE LORD HAD SAVED HIM FROM SUCH A BEWILDERED LIFE OF IGNORANCE. HE THEREFORE SAID THAT HIS INTELLIGENCE HAD BEEN STUNNED. Stabdha-matir na budhyate. 

HE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD FAVORS HIS DEVOTEES BY FORCIBLY STOPPING THEIR MATERIALISTIC ACTIVITIES.

YOU ARE EITHER WALKING PURPOSELY IN RIGHT DIRECTION OR GOING HAYWIRE #Blog0066

You are either walking purposely in right direction or going haywire

एक है चलना एक है भटकना 

अगर चलना सही दिशा में हो

गंतव्य मालूम हो

तो चलने के साथ श्रम तो है

मगर प्रसन्नता भी है

मगर अगर गंतव्य (destination) मालूम नहीं 

तो श्रम (labour) तो है ही

साथ में भ्रम (illusion) भी है

जैसे दरिया में एक धारा बहती है धारा के साथ तो आदमी बह जाएगा मगर बीच में भंवर (vortex) भी आते हैं भंवर डुबा देता है

ONE THING IS WALKING – PROVIDED IT IS IN RIGHT DIRECTION, I.E., YOU KNOW THE DESTINATION, THEN ALTHOUGH IT IS A LABOUR BUT IT IS SATISFYING THAT YOU’RE NEARING THE GOAL

BUT IF DESTINATION IS NOT DECIDED, THEN NOT ONLY IS IT A USELESS LABOUR BUT ALSO A FEARFUL ILLUSION ALSO – LIKE IF YOU SIMPLY FLOW WITH THE RIVER, THOUGH IT’LL TAKE YOU SOME DISTANCE BUT SOONER OR LATER, YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET CAUGHT IN A VORTEX WHICH WILL DROWN YOU.

LIKEWISE  IF OUR GOAL OF LIFE IS FIXED (SURRENDER TO LORD) THEN LIFE BECOMES A PLEASURABLE JOURNEY – ELSE IT IS ALL A FRUITLESS LABORIOUS MEANDER WHICH WOULD LEAD ONE ONLY ONE WAY, I.E., TO LOWER SPECIES OF LIFE IN NEXT BIRTH - AS LORD SAYS I GAVE YOU THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO CEASE YOUR BIRTH DEATH CYCLE BUT YOU DID NOT CAPITALIZE ON THIS.

BHAGVAT,  THE FALSE PRESTIGE OF THINKING "I AM VERY RICH, AND I POSSESS SUCH VAST PROPERTY" IS ANOTHER SIDE OF MATERIAL LIFE. EVERYTHING BELONGS TO THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, AND NO ONE ELSE POSSESSES ANYTHING. THIS IS THE REAL FACT 24th July

TRANSLATION

No one can surpass the time representation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead by material power, by the counsel of ministers, by intelligence, by diplomacy, by fortresses, by mystic mantras, by drugs, by herbs or by any other means.

TRANSLATION

Previously, being empowered by providence, you defeated a great number of such followers of Lord Vishnu. But today those same followers, having defeated us, are roaring in jubilation like lions.

PURPORT

Bhagavad-gita mentions five causes of defeat or victory. Of these five, daiva (providence) is the most powerful (na ca daivat param balam). Bali Maharaja knew the secret of how he had formerly been victorious because providence was in his favor. Now, since that same providence was not in his favor, there was no possibility of his victory. Thus he very intelligently forbade his associates to fight.

TRANSLATION

Unless providence is in our favor, we shall not be able to gain victory. Therefore we must wait for that favorable time when our defeating them will be possible.

TRANSLATION

Shukadeva Gosvami continued: O King, in accordance with the order of their master, Bali Maharaja, all the chiefs of the demons and the Daityas entered the lower regions of the universe, to which they were driven by the soldiers of Vishnu.

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, on the day of soma-pana, after the sacrifice was finished, Garuda, king of the birds, understanding the desire of his master, arrested Bali Maharaja with the ropes of Varuna.

PURPORT

Garuda, the constant companion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, knows the confidential part of the Lord's desire. Bali Maharaja's tolerance and devotion were undoubtedly super excellent. Garuda arrested Bali Maharaja to show the entire universe the greatness of the King's tolerance.

TRANSLATION

Because you have been unable to give charity according to your promise, the rule is that you should go down to live in the hellish planets. Therefore, in accordance with the order of Shukracharya, your spiritual master, now go down and live there.

PURPORT

It is said:

"DEVOTEES SOLELY ENGAGED IN THE DEVOTIONAL SERVICE OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, NARAYANA, NEVER FEAR ANY CONDITION OF LIFE. FOR THEM THE HEAVENLY PLANETS, LIBERATION AND THE HELLISH PLANETS ARE ALL THE SAME, FOR SUCH DEVOTEES ARE INTERESTED ONLY IN THE SERVICE OF THE LORD." (Bhag. 6.17.28) 

A DEVOTEE ENGAGED IN THE SERVICE OF NARAYANA IS ALWAYS IN EQUILIBRIUM. A DEVOTEE ACTUALLY LIVES TRANSCENDENTALLY. ALTHOUGH HE MAY APPEAR TO HAVE GONE TO HELL OR HEAVEN, HE DOES NOT LIVE IN EITHER PLACE; RATHER, HE ALWAYS LIVES IN VAIKUNTHHA (sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhüyaya kalpate). VAMANADEVA ASKED BALI MAHARAJA TO GO TO THE HELLISH PLANETS, APPARENTLY JUST TO SHOW THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE HOW TOLERANT HE WAS, AND BALI MAHARAJA DID NOT HESITATE TO CARRY OUT THE ORDER. A DEVOTEE DOES NOT LIVE ALONE. 

OF COURSE, EVERYONE LIVES WITH THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, BUT BECAUSE THE DEVOTEE IS ENGAGED IN HIS SERVICE, HE ACTUALLY DOES NOT LIVE IN ANY MATERIAL CONDITION. Bhaktivinoda Thakura says, kitha janma hao yatha tuya dasa. THUS HE PRAYS TO TAKE BIRTH AS AN INSIGNIFICANT INSECT IN THE ASSOCIATION OF DEVOTEES. BECAUSE DEVOTEES ARE ENGAGED IN THE SERVICE OF THE LORD, ANYONE WHO LIVES WITH THEM ALSO LIVES IN VAIKUNTHHA.

TRANSLATION

Being falsely proud of your possessions, you promised to give Me land, but you could not fulfill your promise. Therefore, because your promise was false, you must live for a few years in hellish life.

PURPORT

THE FALSE PRESTIGE OF THINKING "I AM VERY RICH, AND I POSSESS SUCH VAST PROPERTY" IS ANOTHER SIDE OF MATERIAL LIFE. EVERYTHING BELONGS TO THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, AND NO ONE ELSE POSSESSES ANYTHING. THIS IS THE REAL FACT. Ishavasyam idam samam yat kinca jagatyam jagat. Bali Maharaja was undoubtedly the most exalted devotee, whereas previously he had maintained a misunderstanding due to false prestige. 

BY THE SUPREME WILL OF THE LORD, HE NOW HAD TO GO TO THE HELLISH PLANETS, BUT BECAUSE HE WENT THERE BY THE ORDER OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, HE LIVED THERE MORE OPULENTLY THAN ONE COULD EXPECT TO LIVE IN THE PLANETS OF HEAVEN. A DEVOTEE ALWAYS LIVES WITH THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, ENGAGING IN HIS SERVICE, AND THEREFORE HE IS ALWAYS TRANSCENDENTAL TO HELLISH OR HEAVENLY RESIDENCES.

BHAGVAT HOW LORD MERELY IN 2 FOOT STEPS MEASURED AND COVERED HIS ENTIRE CREATION 

TRANSLATION

These associates, headed by Sunanda and other chief associates and accompanied by all the predominating deities of the various planets, offered prayers to the Lord, who wore a brilliant helmet, bracelets, and glittering earrings that resembled fish. On the Lord's bosom were the lock of hair called Shrivatsa and the transcendental jewel named Kaustubha. 

He wore a yellow garment, covered by a belt, and He was decorated by a flower garland, surrounded by bees. Manifesting Himself in this way, O King, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose activities are wonderful, covered the entire surface of the earth with one footstep, the sky with His body, and all directions with His arms.

PURPORT

One might argue, "Since Bali Maharaja promised Vamanadeva only the land occupied by His steps, why did Lord Vamanadeva occupy the sky also?" In this regard, Shrila Jiva Gosvami says that the steps include everything, downward and upward. When one stands up, he certainly occupies certain parts of the sky and certain portions of the earth below his feet. Thus there was nothing uncommon for the Supreme Personality of Godhead when He occupied the entire sky with His body.

TRANSLATION

As the Lord took His second step, He covered the heavenly planets. And not even a spot remained for the third step, for the Lord's foot extended higher and higher, beyond Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapoloka and even Satyaloka.

PURPORT

When the Lord's footstep exceeded the height of all the lokas, including Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka, His nails certainly pierced the covering of the universe. The universe is covered by the five material elements (bhümir apo 'nalo vayum kham). As stated in the shastra, these elements are in layers, each ten times thicker than the previous one. 

NONETHELESS, THE NAILS OF THE LORD PIERCED THROUGH ALL THESE LAYERS AND MADE A HOLE PENETRATING INTO THE SPIRITUAL WORLD. FROM THIS HOLE, THE WATER OF THE GANGES INFILTRATED INTO THIS MATERIAL WORLD, AND THEREFORE IT IS SAID, PADA-NAKHA-NIRA JANITA JANA-PAVANA (DASHAVATARA-STOTRA 5). BECAUSE THE LORD KICKED A HOLE IN THE COVERING OF THE UNIVERSE, THE WATER OF THE GANGES CAME INTO THIS MATERIAL WORLD TO DELIVER ALL THE FALLEN SOULS.

GITA-SHLOKA-4.7- THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE MISSION OF GOD INCARNATIONS IS TO AROUSE KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS EVERYWHERE, 22nd July

TRANSLATION

WHENEVER AND WHEREVER THERE IS A DECLINE IN RELIGIOUS PRACTICE, O DESCENDANT OF BHARATA, AND A PREDOMINANT RISE OF IRRELIGION—AT THAT TIME I DESCEND MYSELF.

PURPORT

The word srjami is significant herein.  Srjami cannot be used in the sense of creation, because, according to the previous verse, there is no creation of the Lord's form or body, since all of the forms are eternally existent.

THEREFORE SRJAMI MEANS THAT THE LORD MANIFESTS HIMSELF AS HE IS.

Although the Lord appears on schedule, namely at the end of Dvapara-yuga of the twenty-eighth millennium of the eighth Manu, in one day of Brahma, still He has no obligation to adhere to such rules and regulations because He is completely free to act in many ways at His will.

HE THEREFORE APPEARS BY HIS OWN WILL WHENEVER THERE IS A PREDOMINANCE OF IRRELIGIOSITY AND A DISAPPEARANCE OF TRUE RELIGION.

PRINCIPLES OF RELIGION ARE LAID DOWN IN THE VEDAS, AND ANY DISCREPANCY IN THE MATTER OF PROPERLY EXECUTING THE RULES OF THE VEDAS MAKES ONE IRRELIGIOUS.

IN THE BHAGAVATAM IT IS STATED THAT SUCH PRINCIPLES ARE THE LAWS OF THE LORD.

ONLY THE LORD CAN MANUFACTURE A SYSTEM OF RELIGION.

THE VEDAS ARE ALSO ACCEPTED AS ORIGINALLY SPOKEN BY THE LORD HIMSELF TO BRAHMA, FROM WITHIN HIS HEART.

THEREFORE, THE PRINCIPLES OF DHARMA, OR RELIGION, ARE THE DIRECT ORDERS OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD (dharmam tu saksat-bhagavat-pranitam).

THESE PRINCIPLES ARE CLEARLY INDICATED THROUGHOUT THE BHAGAVAD-GITA.

THE PURPOSE OF THE VEDAS IS TO ESTABLISH SUCH PRINCIPLES UNDER THE ORDER OF THE SUPREME LORD, AND THE LORD DIRECTLY ORDERS, AT THE END OF THE GITA, THAT THE HIGHEST PRINCIPLE OF RELIGION IS TO SURRENDER UNTO HIM ONLY, AND NOTHING MORE.

THE VEDIC PRINCIPLES PUSH ONE TOWARDS COMPLETE SURRENDER UNTO HIM; AND, WHENEVER SUCH PRINCIPLES ARE DISTURBED BY THE DEMONIC, THE LORD APPEARS.

From the Bhagavatam we understand that Lord Buddha is the incarnation of Krsna who appeared when materialism was rampant and materialists were using the pretext of the authority of the Vedas.

Although there are certain restrictive rules and regulations regarding animal sacrifice for particular purposes in the Vedas, people of demonic tendency still took to animal sacrifice without reference to the Vedic principles.

Lord Buddha appeared to stop this nonsense and to establish the Vedic principles of nonviolence.

Therefore each and every avatara, or incarnation of the Lord, has a particular mission, and they are all described in the revealed scriptures.

NO ONE SHOULD BE ACCEPTED AS AN AVATARA UNLESS HE IS REFERRED TO BY SCRIPTURES.

It is not a fact that the Lord appears only on Indian soil.

He can advent Himself anywhere and everywhere, and whenever He desires to appear.

In each and every incarnation, He speaks as much about religion as can be understood by the particular people under their particular circumstances.

BUT THE MISSION IS THE SAME—TO LEAD PEOPLE TO GOD CONSCIOUSNESS AND OBEDIENCE TO THE PRINCIPLES OF RELIGION.

SOMETIMES HE DESCENDS PERSONALLY, AND SOMETIMES HE SENDS HIS BONA FIDE REPRESENTATIVE IN THE FORM OF HIS SON, OR SERVANT, OR HIMSELF IN SOME DISGUISED FORM.

THE PRINCIPLES OF THE BHAGAVAD-GITA WERE SPOKEN TO ARJUNA, AND, FOR THAT MATTER, TO OTHER HIGHLY ELEVATED PERSONS, BECAUSE HE WAS HIGHLY ADVANCED COMPARED TO ORDINARY PERSONS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.

TWO PLUS TWO EQUALS FOUR IS A MATHEMATICAL PRINCIPLE THAT IS TRUE BOTH IN THE BEGINNER'S ARITHMETIC CLASS AND IN THE ADVANCED CLASS AS WELL.

STILL, THERE ARE HIGHER AND LOWER MATHEMATICS.

IN ALL INCARNATIONS OF THE LORD, THEREFORE, THE SAME PRINCIPLES ARE TAUGHT, BUT THEY APPEAR TO BE HIGHER AND LOWER IN VARIED CIRCUMSTANCES.

THE HIGHER PRINCIPLES OF RELIGION BEGIN WITH THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE FOUR ORDERS AND THE FOUR STATUSES OF SOCIAL LIFE, AS WILL BE EXPLAINED LATER.

THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE MISSION OF INCARNATIONS IS TO AROUSE KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS EVERYWHERE.

Such consciousness is manifest and nonmanifest only under different circumstances.

Do these Great Names carry any worth ?

O beloved since You have always sided with even accused, innocent ones now declare loudly that even they are also accused (so that You come on their side)

TRANSLATION

O KING, THE WATER FROM LORD BRAHMA'S KAMANDALU WASHED THE LOTUS FEET OF LORD VAMANADEVA, WHO IS KNOWN AS URUKRAMA, THE WONDERFUL ACTOR. THUS THAT WATER BECAME SO PURE THAT IT WAS TRANSFORMED INTO THE WATER OF THE GANGES, WHICH WENT FLOWING DOWN FROM THE SKY, PURIFYING THE THREE WORLDS LIKE THE PURE FAME OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD.

PURPORT

HERE WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE GANGES BEGAN WHEN THE WATER FROM LORD BRAHMA'S KAMANDALU WASHED THE LOTUS FEET OF LORD VAMANADEVA. BUT IN THE FIFTH CANTO IT IS STATED THAT THE GANGES BEGAN WHEN VAMANADEVA'S LEFT FOOT PIERCED THE COVERING OF THE UNIVERSE SO THAT THE TRANSCENDENTAL WATER OF THE CAUSAL OCEAN LEAKED THROUGH. 

AND ELSEWHERE IT IS ALSO STATED THAT LORD NARAYANA APPEARED AS THE WATER OF THE GANGES. THE WATER OF THE GANGES, THEREFORE, IS A COMBINATION OF THREE TRANSCENDENTAL WATERS, AND THUS THE GANGES IS ABLE TO PURIFY THE THREE WORLDS. This is the description given by Shrila Vishvanatha Cakravarti Thakura.

TRANSLATION

Lord Brahma and all the predominating deities of the various planetary systems began to worship Lord Vamanadeva, their supreme master, who had reduced Himself from His all-pervading form to His original form. They collected all the ingredients and paraphernalia for this worship.

PURPORT

VAMANADEVA FIRST EXPANDED HIMSELF TO THE UNIVERSAL FORM AND THEN REDUCED HIMSELF TO THE ORIGINAL VAMANA-RÜPA. THUS HE ACTED EXACTLY LIKE LORD KRSHNA, WHO, AT THE REQUEST OF ARJUNA, FIRST SHOWED HIS UNIVERSAL FORM AND LATER RESUMED HIS ORIGINAL FORM AS KRSHNA. 

THE LORD CAN ASSUME ANY FORM HE LIKES, BUT HIS ORIGINAL FORM IS THAT OF KRSHNA (krshnas tu bhagavan svayam). 

According to the capacity of the devotee, the Lord assumes various forms so that the devotee can handle Him. This is His causeless mercy. When Lord Vamanadeva resumed His original form, Lord Brahma and his associates collected various paraphernalia for worship with which to please Him.

PURPORT

ACCORDING TO BHAGAVAD-GITA, A SADHU (HOLYMAN) IS A MAN IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

A PERSON MAY APPEAR TO BE IRRELIGIOUS, BUT IF HE HAS THE QUALIFICATIONS OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS WHOLLY AND FULLY, HE IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD TO BE A SADHU.

AND DUSKRTAM APPLIES TO ONE WHO DOESN'T CARE FOR KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

SUCH MISCREANTS, OR DUSKRTAM, ARE DESCRIBED AS FOOLISH AND THE LOWEST OF MANKIND, EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY BE DECORATED WITH MUNDANE EDUCATION; WHEREAS ANOTHER PERSON, WHO IS ONE HUNDRED PERCENT ENGAGED IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS, IS ACCEPTED AS SADHU, EVEN THOUGH SUCH A PERSON MAY NEITHER BE LEARNED NOR WELL CULTURED.

AS FAR AS THE ATHEISTIC ARE CONCERNED, IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR THE SUPREME LORD TO APPEAR AS HE IS TO DESTROY THEM, AS HE DID WITH THE DEMONS RAVANA AND KAMSA.

THE LORD HAS MANY AGENTS WHO ARE QUITE COMPETENT TO VANQUISH DEMONS.

BUT THE LORD ESPECIALLY DESCENDS TO APPEASE HIS UNALLOYED DEVOTEES, WHO ARE ALWAYS HARASSED BY THE DEMONIC.

THE DEMON HARASSES THE DEVOTEE, EVEN THOUGH THE LATTER MAY HAPPEN TO BE HIS KIN.

ALTHOUGH PRAHLADA MAHARAJA WAS THE SON OF HIRANYAKASIPU, HE WAS NONETHELESS PERSECUTED BY HIS FATHER; ALTHOUGH DEVAKI, THE MOTHER OF KRSNA, WAS THE SISTER OF KAMSA, SHE AND HER HUSBAND VASUDEVA WERE PERSECUTED ONLY BECAUSE KRSNA WAS TO BE BORN OF THEM.

SO LORD KRSNA APPEARED PRIMARILY TO DELIVER DEVAKI, RATHER THAN KILL KAMSA, BUT BOTH WERE PERFORMED SIMULTANEOUSLY.

THEREFORE IT IS SAID HERE THAT TO DELIVER THE DEVOTEE AND VANQUISH THE DEMON MISCREANTS, THE LORD APPEARS IN DIFFERENT INCARNATIONS.

In the Caitanya-caritamrta of Krsnadasa Kaviraja, the following verses summarize these principles of incarnation:

srsti-hetu yei murti prapance avatare

sei isvara-murti 'avatara' nama dhare

mayatita paravyome savara avasthana

visve 'avatari' dhare 'avatara' nama.

"THE AVATARA, OR INCARNATION OF GODHEAD, DESCENDS FROM THE KINGDOM OF GOD FOR MATERIAL MANIFESTATION.

AND THE PARTICULAR FORM OF THE PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD WHO SO DESCENDS IS CALLED AN INCARNATION, OR AVATARA.

Such incarnations are situated in the spiritual world, the kingdom of God.

When they descend to the material creation, they assume the name avatara."

THERE ARE VARIOUS KINDS OF AVATARAS, SUCH AS PURUSAVATARAS, GUNAVATARAS, LILAVATARAS, SAKTYAVESA AVATARAS, MANVANTARA-AVATARAS AND YUGAVATARAS—ALL APPEARING ON SCHEDULE ALL OVER THE UNIVERSE.

BUT LORD KRSNA IS THE PRIMEVAL LORD, THE FOUNTAINHEAD OF ALL AVATARAS.

LORD SRI KRSNA DESCENDS FOR THE SPECIFIC PURPOSES OF MITIGATING THE ANXIETIES OF THE PURE DEVOTEES, WHO ARE VERY ANXIOUS TO SEE HIM IN HIS ORIGINAL VRNDAVANA PASTIMES.

THEREFORE, THE PRIME PURPOSE OF THE KRSNA AVATARA IS TO SATISFY HIS UNALLOYED DEVOTEES.

THE LORD SAYS THAT HE INCARNATES HIMSELF IN EVERY MILLENNIUM.

THIS INDICATES THAT HE INCARNATES ALSO IN THE AGE OF KALI.

AS STATED IN THE SRIMAD-BHAGAVATAM, THE INCARNATION IN THE AGE OF KALI IS LORD CHAITANYA MAHAPRABHU, WHO SPREAD THE WORSHIP OF KRSNA BY THE SANKIRTANA MOVEMENT (CONGREGATIONAL CHANTING OF THE HOLY NAMES), AND SPREAD KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGHOUT INDIA.

He predicted that this culture of sankirtana would be broadcast all over the world, from town to town and village to village.

LORD CHAITANYA AS THE INCARNATION OF KRSNA, THE PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, IS DESCRIBED SECRETLY BUT NOT DIRECTLY IN THE CONFIDENTIAL PARTS OF THE REVEALED SCRIPTURES, SUCH AS THE UPANISADS, MAHABHARATA, BHAGAVATAM, ETC.

The devotees of Lord Krsna are much attracted by the sankirtana movement of Lord Chaitanya.

This avatara of the Lord does not kill the miscreants, but delivers them by the causeless mercy of the Lord.

TRANSLATION

Bali Maharaja saw beneath the garments of the Lord, who acts wonderfully, the evening twilight. In the Lord's private parts he saw the Prajapatis, and in the round portion of the waist he saw himself with his confidential associates. In the Lord's navel he saw the sky, on the Lord's waist he saw the seven oceans, and on the Lord's bosom he saw all the clusters of stars.

TRANSLATION

My dear King, on the heart of Lord Murari he saw religion; on the chest, both pleasing words and truthfulness; in the mind, the moon; on the bosom, the goddess of fortune, with a lotus flower in her hand; on the neck, all the Vedas and all sound vibrations; on the arms, all the demigods, headed by King Indra; in both ears, all the directions; on the head, the upper planetary systems; on the hair, the clouds; in the nostrils, the wind; on the eyes, the sun; and in the mouth, fire. 

From His words came all the Vedic mantras, on His tongue was the demigod of water, Varunadeva, on His eyebrows were the regulative principles, and on His eyelids were day and night. [When His eyes were open it was daytime, and when they were closed it was night.] On His forehead was anger, and on His lips was greed. 

O King, in His touch were lusty desires, in His semen were all the waters, on His back was irreligion, and in His wonderful activities or steps was the fire of sacrifice. On His shadow was death, in His smile was the illusory energy, and on the hairs of His body were all the drugs and herbs. 

In His veins were all the rivers, on His nails were all the stones, in His intelligence were Lord Brahma, the demigods and the great saintly persons, and throughout His entire body and senses were all living entities, moving and stationary. Bali Maharaja thus saw everything in the gigantic body of the Lord.
