(LORD ASSURED BALI) UNTIL BALI MAHARAJA ACHIEVES THE POSITION OF KING OF HEAVEN, HE SHALL LIVE ON THE PLANET SUTALA, WHICH WAS MADE BY VISHVAKARMA ACCORDING TO MY ORDER. BECAUSE IT IS ESPECIALLY PROTECTED BY ME, IT IS FREE FROM MENTAL AND BODILY MISERIES, FATIGUE, DIZZINESS, DEFEAT AND ALL OTHER DISTURBANCES. BALI MAHARAJA, YOU MAY NOW GO LIVE THERE PEACEFULLY.

PURPORT

Vishvakarma is the engineer or architect for the palatial buildings in the heavenly planets. Therefore, since he was engaged to construct the residential quarters of Bali Maharaja, the buildings and palaces on the planet Sutala must at least equal those on the heavenly planets. A further advantage of this place designed for Bali Maharaja was that he would not be disturbed by any outward calamity. Moreover, he would not be disturbed by mental or bodily miseries. These are all extraordinary features of the planet Sutala, where Bali Maharaja would live.

In the Vedic literatures we find descriptions of many different planets where there are many, many palaces, hundreds and thousands of times better than those of which we have experience on this planet earth. When we speak of palaces, this naturally includes the idea of great cities and towns. Unfortunately, when modern scientists try to explore other planets they see nothing but rocks and sand. Of course, they may go on their frivolous excursions, but the students of the Vedic literature will never believe them or give them any credit for exploring other planets.

GOD SAID “O BALI MAHARAJA [INDRASENA], NOW YOU MAY GO TO THE PLANET SUTALA, WHICH IS DESIRED EVEN BY THE DEMIGODS. LIVE THERE PEACEFULLY, SURROUNDED BY YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES. ALL GOOD FORTUNE UNTO YOU.”

PURPORT

BALI MAHARAJA WAS TRANSFERRED FROM THE HEAVENLY PLANET TO THE PLANET SUTALA, WHICH IS HUNDREDS OF TIMES BETTER THAN HEAVEN, as indicated by the words svargibhim prarthyam. 

WHEN THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD DEPRIVES HIS DEVOTEE OF MATERIAL OPULENCES, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE LORD PUTS HIM INTO POVERTY; RATHER, THE LORD PROMOTES HIM TO A HIGHER POSITION. THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD DID NOT ASK BALI MAHARAJA TO SEPARATE FROM HIS FAMILY; INSTEAD, THE LORD ALLOWED HIM TO STAY WITH HIS FAMILY MEMBERS (jnatibhim parivaritam).

TRANSLATION

GOD SAID TO BALI “ON THE PLANET SUTALA, NOT EVEN THE PREDOMINATING DEITIES OF OTHER PLANETS, WHAT TO SPEAK OF ORDINARY PEOPLE, WILL BE ABLE TO CONQUER YOU. AS FAR AS THE DEMONS ARE CONCERNED, IF THEY TRANSGRESS YOUR RULE, MY DISC WILL KILL THEM.”

TRANSLATION

“O GREAT HERO, I SHALL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU AND GIVE YOU PROTECTION IN ALL RESPECTS ALONG WITH YOUR ASSOCIATES AND PARAPHERNALIA. MOREOVER, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO SEE ME THERE.”

TRANSLATION

“BECAUSE THERE YOU WILL SEE MY SUPREME PROWESS, YOUR MATERIALISTIC IDEAS AND ANXIETIES THAT HAVE ARISEN FROM YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH THE DEMONS AND DANAVAS WILL IMMEDIATELY BE VANQUISHED.”

PURPORT

THE LORD ASSURED BALI MAHARAJA OF ALL PROTECTION, AND FINALLY THE LORD ASSURED HIM OF PROTECTION FROM THE EFFECTS OF BAD ASSOCIATION WITH THE DEMONS. BALI MAHARAJA CERTAINLY BECAME AN EXALTED DEVOTEE, BUT HE WAS SOMEWHAT ANXIOUS BECAUSE HIS ASSOCIATION WAS NOT PURELY DEVOTIONAL. THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD THEREFORE ASSURED HIM THAT HIS DEMONIAC MENTALITY WOULD BE ANNIHILATED. IN OTHER WORDS, BY THE ASSOCIATION OF DEVOTEES, THE DEMONIAC MENTALITY IS VANQUISHED.

What is it that a man can do but not the animal ? 

ऐसा कौन सा कार्य है जो इंसान करता है और पशु नहीं करता 

एक और रहस्य की बात, भजन के अतिरिक्त हम जो भी करते हैं (यानि जो पशु भी करता है) उसके लिए हमें छल करना पड़ता है कपट करना पड़ता है, पशु को वह भी नहीं करना पड़ता 

आप जो वस्तु अर्जित करते हैं उस वस्तु के साथ भय भी अर्जित करते हैं, उस वस्तु के साथ पीड़ा भी अर्जित करते हैं, पशु के जीवन में यह दुर्दांत स्थिति भी नहीं है  

(दुर्दांत = जिसका दमन या वश में करना कठिन हो, difficult to control) 

 

यदि कसौटी पर कसोगे अपने जीवन को, तो यही पाओगे कि भजन हीन जीवन, पशु से भी निकृष्ट जीवन है 

(निकृष्ट = abominable)  

 

और यह दुर्दांत स्थिति कैसे उपजी, क्योंकि हमने महत जनों में, संत जनों में, श्रेष्ठ जनों में, शास्त्रों में अपना श्रद्धा, विश्वास खो दिया है, आप बहुत बुद्धिमान हैं , एक का दस कर लेते हैं 

 

What is it that a man can do but not the animal ? 

 

It is devotion to Lord. And besides devotion, whatever we earn, a lot of it has to be earned with deceit and selfish motive but animal doesn't have do that  

 

Besides money, we earn associated fear & pain also whereas the animal is free of these.  

 

If you compare the benchmarks, the human is much worse off than the animal, in fact it is abominable, i.e., if we do not consider भक्ति part.  

It is ONLY the devotion that sets the man apart from animal. 

 

तू बालक नहीं , भरयो सयानक (चतुराई से भरा है तू, लेकिन उस चतुराई की दिशा ठीक नहीं है) 

 

But although man is very sharp in worldly matters of multiplying his money etc.( तू बालक नहीं, भरयो सयानक), how has the unfortunate situation been created that man forgot Lord? Because man’s faith in devotees, saints, vedas & shastras is lost.  

 

“पड़ी नमाज, ते लयाज़ ना सिखया,  

तेरियां किस कम पड़ियाँ नमाज़ां, 

ते अमल ना कित्ता , 

तेरीयां किस कम दित्तियां आवाजा , 

बुल्ले शाह पता तां लगसी , 

जे चिड़ी फंसी हथ बाजाँ”  

 

“you have read holy books but not learnt compassion 

What is the use if you have not implemented the scriptures 

What is the use of your crying hoarse the Lord’s name  

All this false facade (of not sincerely devoting yourself to Lord) you have created, you will realise the folly & consequences once you are caught (फंसी हथ) by the vultures (बाजाँ ) of Yamraj (जे चिड़ी फंसी हथ बाजाँ)" 

 

“मन वे के जात किसे नहीं पुछनी  

ओथे अमला दे होन गे नबेड़े, 

समझ मन मेरे, भजन कर गोविंदा” 

 

“O foolish mind, nobody is going to ask your birth heredity (मन वे के जात किसे नहीं पुछनी) 

There (at Yamraj’s place), only what you practiced is considered paramount (,i.e., whether you loved Lord or not) (ओथे अमला दे होन गे नबेड़े, (अमला =practices followed by you, नबेड़े =final decisions) 

Therefore, devote yourself O mind, to Lord & sing His glories (समझ मन मेरे, भजन कर गोविंदा)” 

 

“काहे कृष्ण भजत नहीं नींके, मनुष्य को तन पाए, भजो बृजनाथ को” 

 

“why have not devoted lovingly to Lord Krishna even after getting human birth”

The intricacies of action are very hard to understand. Therefore one should know properly what action is, what forbidden action is, and what inaction is.

Purport:

If one is serious about liberation from material bondage, one has to understand the distinctions between action, inaction and unauthorized actions.

One has to apply oneself to such an analysis of action, reaction and perverted actions because it is a very difficult subject matter.

To understand Krsna consciousness and action according to the modes, one has to learn one's relationship with the Supreme; i.e., one who has learned perfectly knows that every living entity is the eternal servitor of the Lord and that consequently one has to act in Krsna consciousness.

The entire Bhagavad-gita is directed toward this conclusion.

Any other conclusions, against this consciousness and its attendant reactions, are vikarmas, or prohibitive actions.

To understand all this one has to associate with authorities in Krsna consciousness and learn the secret from them; this is as good as learning from the Lord directly.

Otherwise, even the most intelligent person will be bewildered.

TRANSLATION

All the liberated souls in ancient times acted with this understanding and so attained liberation. Therefore, as the ancients, you should perform your duty in this divine consciousness.

PURPORT

There are two classes of men.

Some of them are full of polluted material things within their hearts, and some of them are materially free.

Krsna consciousness is equally beneficial for both of these persons.

Those who are full of dirty things can take to the line of Krsna consciousness for a gradual cleansing process, following the regulative principles of devotional service.

Those who are already cleansed of the impurities may continue to act in the same Krsna consciousness so that others may follow their exemplary activities and thereby be benefitted.

FOOLISH PERSONS OR NEOPHYTES IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS OFTEN WANT TO RETIRE FROM ACTIVITIES WITHOUT HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS.

ARJUNA'S DESIRE TO RETIRE FROM ACTIVITIES ON THE BATTLEFIELD WAS NOT APPROVED BY THE LORD.

One need only know how to act.

TO RETIRE FROM THE ACTIVITIES OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS AND TO SIT ALOOF MAKING A SHOW OF KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS; IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN ACTUALLY ENGAGING IN THE FIELD OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE SAKE OF KRSNA.

Arjuna is here advised to act in Krsna consciousness, following in the footsteps of the Lord's previous disciples, such as the sun-god Vivasvan, as mentioned hereinbefore.

The Supreme Lord knows all His past activities, as well as those of persons who acted in Krsna consciousness in the past.

Therefore He recommends the acts of the sun-god, who learned this art from the Lord some millions of years before.

All such students of Lord Krsna are mentioned here as past liberated persons, engaged in the discharge of duties allotted by Krsna.
